What is Onggi’s culinary philosophy?
Onggi takes its name from traditional Korean earthenware vessels, historically used to store and ferment foods such as kimchi, sauces, and pastes.
Our culinary approach bridges the artistry of Joseon Dynasty royal court cuisine with the warmth of home cooking, creating a balanced and thoughtful representation of Korean heritage. We focus on the natural flavor of our ingredients, avoiding heavy sauces or excessive seasoning – a philosophy rooted in Joseon-era cuisine, where the essence of each ingredient was celebrated. Reimagined for the modern palate, each dish reflects the art of fermentation, seasonal ingredients, and careful preparation. -
What is hanjeongsik and what can I expect from a multi-course meal?
Hanjeongsik is Korea’s traditional full-course dining, where a variety of dishes come together to create a harmonious meal. While it is traditionally served all at once, Onggi presents it in 4- or 6-course menus, allowing each dish to be highlighted in a progression of flavors and textures.
-
Are reservations required?
Dinner reservations are recommended for hanjeongsik to enjoy each course at its best; walk-ins are always welcome. Lunch is more casual, and reservations are not required but are gladly accepted.
-
Is Onggi suitable for special occasions or private events?
Onggi is an ideal setting for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. Our two private dining rooms accommodate 4–12 guests. For larger gatherings, our dining room can host up to 40 guests, while events of more than 40 can be accommodated with additional use of our bar and patio. Multi-course hanjeongsik menus can be tailored for your event. To inquire, please complete the form under ‘Private Events’ in the menu bar above.
-
Do you offer vegan or vegetarian options?
We offer multiple vegan and vegetarian options, including a rice bowl lunch set and a 6-course vegan hanjeongsik experience. Plant-based choices are also available on our a la carte, small plate, and happy hour menus.
-
Are your dishes gluten-free?
Our menu is gluten-free, with these exceptions: jeon (savory pancake), Dalg Nalgae (battered chicken wings), mandu (pork dumplings), and yakgwa (Korean honey cookie). Gluten-free options are available upon request, except for mandu.
Our takeout and catering menu is all gluten-free, except for fish cakes.
-
Do you use seasonal ingredients?
We prioritize seasonal ingredients in every dish. Korean cuisine traditionally emphasizes cooking with what’s in season, ensuring freshness, peak flavor, and nutritional balance. Our multi-course hanjeongsik menus and banchan are carefully curated to highlight seasonal vegetables, seafood, and other ingredients.
-
How long does a typical hanjeongsik meal take?
Our goal with the hanjeongsik experience is to transport guests to another time and place through food. Because of this, times can vary from 1-3 hours, depending on the course selection, but we typically aim for 90 minutes.
-
Can I customize my multi-course menu?
The menus are set in a particular way to emulate the Royal Court Cuisine of the Joseon Dynasty. We do offer a 4-course menu with optional add-ons from the a la carte menu to let you customize your experience. While we usually adhere to this format, we can accommodate special menu requests or modifications with 72 hours notice, with pricing subject to change depending on the range of requests.
-
Which dishes are available for takeout?
A set meal option, our banchan, as well as our dine-in a la carte menu, are available for takeout. Please visit the Takeout/Delivery & Catering link in the menu bar above for details.

We offer both pickup and delivery through Grubhub for your convenience. You’re also welcome to call us at (202) 450-1085 to place a pickup order. Kindly place banchan orders at least one day in advance to allow time for preparation.
